About Us
PrusaSlicer is a robust, open-source 3D slicing software created by Prusa Research. It transforms 3D models into G-code instructions for 3D printers. Initially derived from Alessandro Ranellucci’s open-source Slic3r project, PrusaSlicer has undergone extensive development since its 2016 fork, when Prusa Research customized it to meet the expanding needs of Original Prusa 3D printers.
Development History
Slic3r, first introduced in 2011 within the RepRap community, quickly became popular for its powerful capabilities. Prusa Research adopted it as their go-to slicing software but soon recognized the need to enhance its development, integrating new features and optimizing it for their expanding range of 3D printers. This evolution gave rise to Slic3r Prusa Edition, which was rebranded as PrusaSlicer in 2019 to signify its divergence from the original Slic3r codebase.
Key Features
PrusaSlicer is a versatile 3D printing software designed to cater to both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts. It boasts features such as multi-material printing, automatic model repair, diverse infill patterns, and advanced options like variable layer heights and spiral vase mode. Its powerful G-code generation ensures compatibility with a wide range of printers, including those from RepRap, Makerbot, and Ultimaker ecosystems, in addition to Prusa models.
The software features a user-friendly interface with three modes—Simple, Advanced, and Expert—tailored to different skill levels. Regular updates from a dedicated development team ensure continuous improvement, and its command-line functionality further enhances its adaptability for various applications.
Open-Source Commitment
PrusaSlicer remains true to its open-source origins, actively contributing to and benefiting from the global 3D printing community. Available for free, its source code is hosted on GitHub, where Prusa invites developers worldwide to collaborate. This open-source approach has helped PrusaSlicer become one of the most popular slicer tools for both hobbyists and professionals in 3D printing.
